11/29/14

We had a lot of math to catch up on.... So we started there. Our first lesson was a continuation on partitioning - using the part and whole diagram.

Then we practiced partitioning on the abacus, Nd showing the same partition on the diagram. 

Next, we practiced adding parts to make a whole.

After math, we started practicing our first lowercase letter - "c". He had some difficulty with this, so we ended up stopping for the day. 

11/27/14

Today we started with handwriting, per E's request. He finished up the capital alphabet yesterday, so today we did a big review - he did awesome!

After the review, we moved on to math. We started with adding on the abacus. 

Then we moved onto his first progress assessment. I actually could check off a good amount of things from the book. We even skipped the lesson after the assessment because he could already do all of it.

On our new lesson for today, we learned about partitioning. We partitioned the number "5" in as many ways as we could, then E copied the equations down on paper. (His number handwriting was impeccable!)

T decided to join us for evening school today. She worked hard on her workbook while E finished his final capital letters.

T got jealous of E's workbook having actual letters in it, so she asked to learn one of the letters he was working on. 

Then we working on writing her whole name - she was very reluctant, but she did it!

11/12/14

He chose to start with handwriting, again....

Started with a perfect "C"! We learned how the "Magic C" is the beginning of making several letters.

The "O" and "Q"....

...and "G"!

For math, we began by counting items using the abacus.

We determined if a stack of tiles was even or odd by pairing it into groups of two.

Last, we worked with our geoboards copying patterns.

Handwriting first today! He wanted to show me he knew just what to do, and didn't need me to show him at all!

Moving on to math.... We made an equilateral triangle with tally sticks.

And practiced cutting....

Late post from 10/27/14

T decided to join us this evening! We started, of course, with our warm up song!

Our first lesson was on adding on the abacus. He is working on "take and give" - take from this line, and give to the top one. 

Then we played a game. He had 10 pieces of paper - some with numbers, some with tally marks. He picked a piece of paper, showed the number on the abacus, and I had to guess what was on the paper.

Next, he labeled each even card with a yellow tile, and each odd with a green. Then we noted the pattern.

Last, we matched the bead cards to the dot cards.

For handwriting, we worked on Y, 7, and 8. First, we did "Wet, Dry, Try."

T made a 7!

Workbook time!

T decided to do some workbook, too. 

It was an easy and quick evening, and a great start to our second six weeks!

First 6 weeks = Done!

Today we finally caught up on our handwriting and finished out our solar system unit. We didn't get as involved as I had hoped, but we still had a good time! 

Today we introduced capital U, V, W, and X. We didn't really bother with "Wet, Dry, Try" because E picked up the chalk and just wanted to show me he knew what to do! 

So we moved right on to workbook pages.... He struggled a little with the U, but overall zipped right through. I often had to remind him to take his time, and always do his best work. Several times I made him erase attempts where I knew he wasn't trying. Hopefully he will learn to try hard the first time! 

T joined us for a little while....

To finish up our solar system unit, we learned about Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.

Then we did fill in the blank...

Finally, we labelled the planets on a diagram.

Next 6 weeks we will be studying Colorado in preparation for our trip to Denver in January!
